Case Study: Equipping Students for a Digital First World
Equipping students with digital skills is key to setting them up for success in the 21st century. In collaboration with the Tsavo Trust and ARES NGO, Haller worked to improve learning outcomes and support teachers through the establishment of digital resources and sustainable energy solutions at two secondary schools in Makueni County. The project was underpinned by an ambition to bridge the digital divide in underserved communities and foster an environment of innovation, engagement, and inclusivity in education.
At Kathekani Secondary School and Joanna Chase Secondary School, Haller and Tsavo Trust created dedicated ICT hubs. Included in these hubs were 60 laptops (across the two schools), along with speakers and projectors. ARES NGO provided two servers pre-loaded with educational content, giving students access to over 40,000 digital textbooks, virtual labs, and interactive multimedia content.
To power these hubs, solar power was installed at both schools. This provides sustainable, stable power and also generates cost savings, allowing the reallocation of resources to other educational priorities.
The project’s immediate beneficiaries were the 650 students and 37 teachers in this year’s cohort, but the impact stands to be much longer-lasting. The ICT hubs have created a technology-rich learning environment for the whole school for years to come.
The program has empowered teachers to incorporate technology into their lessons, improving methodologies and reducing the time taken to prep sessions. For pupils, it ensures the development of essential digital skills needed for academic and career success.
